Keep the revs low until the temperature gauge climbs off the bottom. This is where most of the protection comes from.


3. Wash the underbody, not just the paint.

Choose the car wash option that sprays underneath. Once a month through winter is enough to keep salt from settling in.


4. Shorten your oil change interval.

If most of your driving is short trips in cold weather, treat that as severe service and change the oil earlier than the standard schedule suggests.


5. Check coolant strength before the first freeze.

A cheap tester tells you whether your mixture still protects to the temperatures your area actually reaches.


6. Do not ignore a slow coolant leak.

Small winter leaks become summer overheating events, and overheating is what turns a repair into a replacement.

When the Engine Is Already Gone

Sometimes the damage has already been done, usually by an overheating event or years of neglected oil changes on a car that never gets driven far enough.

At that point the decision comes down to what the rest of the vehicle looks like. If the body is solid, the transmission shifts cleanly, and the frame has not rusted through, replacing the engine is almost always cheaper than replacing the car.
